چکیده

A recent experiment, performed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has demonstrated that by locking a microwave oscillator to an optical pulse train from a modelocked laser, exceptional timing stability can be achieved. In the experiment, a 10.225-GHz microwave oscillator was locked to an optical phase detection apparatus consisting of a modelocked laser, a Sagnac interferometer, and an optical phase modulator. A relative out-of-loop timing jitter of 6.8 fs rms was measured between the locked oscillator and the optical pulse train over a 1-MHz bandwidth and a 10-hour integration period, corresponding to a stability of 1.9×10. Here, we consider the potential for an integrated version of this optical phase-locked oscillator. Detailed analysis of the components required for integration is used to estimate the timing performance of the integrated optic phase-locked oscillator. Initial estimates indicate potential for a single-sideband phase noise level of -153 dBc/Hz and corresponding jitter level of ~1 fs across a 10-MHz loop bandwidth. While this work is still in the design stages, if successful, the result will be a compact and low-power oscillator with exceptional phase noise and timing stability that can be applied across many applications including RADAR, global positioning, and communications systems.

Towards a Phase-Locked Superconducting Integrated Receiver: Prospects and Limitations

Presently a Josephson Flux Flow Oscillator (FFO) appears to be the most developed superconducting on-chip local oscillator for integrated submm-wave SIS receivers. The feasibility of phase locking the FFO to an external reference oscillator at all frequencies of interest has to be proven for practical FFO implementation in radio astronomy and other spectral applications. A linewidth of a phase-...

The Transient Behavior of LC and Ring Oscillators under External Frequency Injection

In this work, time domain analysis is used to solve Adler’s equation in order to obtain the required time, for an oscillator under external injection, reaching the steady-state condition. Mathematical approach has been applied to fully describe the transient of frequency acquisition in injection-locked LC and Ring oscillators considering their time-varying nature. Then, the analysis is verifie...

Analog Dialogue 33 - 3 ( 1999 ) 1 Phase - Locked Loops for High - Frequency Receivers and Transmitters – Part 1

PLL Basics A phase-locked loop is a feedback system combining a voltagecontrolled oscillator and a phase comparator so connected that the oscillator frequency (or phase) accurately tracks that of an applied frequencyor phase-modulated signal. Phase-locked loops can be used, for example, to generate stable output frequency signals from a fixed low-frequency signal. The first phase-locked loops w...

A 0.042-mm Fully Integrated Analog PLL with Stacked Capacitor-Inductor in 45nm CMOS

We present a fully integrated Phase Locked Loop in an advanced 45nm CMOS technology. The loop filter is integrated on chip under the voltage-controlled oscillator inductor, resulting in significant area savings. The whole PLL measures only 280um by 150um. The PLL has a dual-band output for 2-2.5GHz and 4-5GHz. The circuit operates from a 0.85V supply and consumes 15.3mW for a -120dBc/Hz phase n...

Implementation of electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry for ultrashort pulse characterization.

Electro-optic spectral shearing interferometry is implemented for the highly sensitive characterization of ultrashort pulses from a free-running source. A simple phase-locked-loop clock recovery circuit is used to extract the high-frequency microwave clock signal to drive the phase modulator for spectral shearing. We demonstrate accurate full temporal characterization of 200-fs pulses from an o...
